You thought Firefox was fast?

By

No, this post is not on Chrome. Firefox is fast, but if you’ve used Chrome you know it can get faster than that and it doesn’t necessarily depend on your connection speed. Still, a lot of us don’t want to make the switch to Chrome because we can’t leave our precious Addons from Firefox behind. But what if you could have both?

Firefox is currently testing a future build which is still in pre-release Alpha that gives you just that! Named ‘Minefield’, I would go as far as to say that this version is in parallel with Chrome in terms of speed yet with all the functionality that Firefox provides. Minefield uses a different rendering engine along with other plugins similar to Chrome to make Minefield just as fast.

Sporting a different icon and name, MineField is virtually the faster version of the current stable version of Firefox, well atleast for now, the stable release of the next version would have several other minor interface changes as well. Another tiny extra feature (as you can see in the screenshot) I noticed was the ‘smart bookmarks’ feature on the bookmarks toolbar giving you links to recently bookmarked, most visited (already in stable version) and recently tagged links.

You can download the Minefield version that suits your operating system from this directory. This is the official page for the Minefield project. You can install it and use it in parallel with your current stable version of Firefox. All bookmarks and addons will be imported. If you are not comfortable with installing it along with your current version of Firefox I found this portable version of Minefield you can use (uploaded on Computer Realm, not sure where I found it, ~10MB), no addons or bookmarks imported though.

Definitely Chrome is far behind just because of add-ons but the I was impressed by the search speed of chrome on Google. Definitely Minefiels will be an awaited thing for mw.:-). Mozilla Rocks anyhow.

I don’t know if its my computer, or my attachment to Firefox, but Chrome is very slow on my system. not even half of the speed of firefox, and that is that I’m running a lot of plugins on firefox, which in theory makes the browser slower.

Chrome might be faster on Google applications, but the Internet is much bigger than that.

It’s not necessarily faster on google applications, its faster in general, by just a bit though. strange it’s the opposite for you, you tried it with the latest version?

If you are looking for speed only, chrome is a really good alternative too.
