We all know that there are plenty of tools like DownloadHelper (to name the best) to download videos from sites like Youtube. With these tools downloading and storing a tutorial or a movie trailer or any video for that matter has never been easier. With the ability to download these videos as FLV files and watch them locally on your hard drive you’ve got to have an FLV player that is just as good as what you get embedded in the video site and that’s where Wimpy comes in.
Wimpy is a free standalone (does not require installation, just unzip and go!) FLV player for Windows and Mac which lets you easily play your downloaded FLV videos. The main feature of Wimpy is the simplicity of the application, it does not require installation, it’s small in size (3MB) and has a simple interface. You can watch your videos with the simple drag-n-drop feature it supports. You can also resize the video to any size you want.
With the tiny size of the EXE, in the latest version (3.0) they’ve actually managed to squeeze in over a dozen skins for the player as well! I guess the one drawback is it does not have full screen support but I realized why after using the more popular FLV player which supports full screen playback, (and has the negative points of requiring installation, an uglier interface and more memory consumption which is why I prefer Wimpy) for some reason FLV’s don’t play well locally when in full screen, it jerks a lot and you can’t really watch the video, so I guess Wimpy was smarter to leave full screen support out.
Wimpy is probably the most ideal FLV player out there for now based on my research and usage, which player do you use?
