One of the main annoyances when using a computer would be if it takes an eternity to startup, unfortunately many computer systems share this fate, it also baffles many of the users because once the computer gets through startup, the worst seems to be behind them and the computer functions at normal pace afterwards.
This scenario could be due to a number of reasons which I have covered in my post on how to speed up the starting up of your computer. One of the reasons I mentioned in the post was the number of programs launched at start up, this factor could single-handedly slow your computer’s startup to a crawl. So what needs to be launched on startup?
This depends on your requirements, how you use your computer and what applications you use. Lets take a look at some scenarios:
Those are just a few of the ways you might use your PC, for the most part, if there is no particular program to use every time you log on to your computer, your antivirus and/or antispyware program should be the only applications on startup, if you do use any program whenever you use your computer system, first check if it uses up a lot of resources, if it doesn’t, append that application to startup as well, if it does, wait till your computer has completely started up and launch it manually.
There are a number of third party applications that let you configure your start up applications, most operating systems provide this feature by default as well.
On Windows Vista
Go to Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools > Manage Startup Programs
On Windows XP
Go to Start > Run > “msconfig” > Startup tab
A third party application of note that you might want to try as an alternative for Windows operating systems would be Startup Control Panel.

Your suggestions seem cool, but upon looking at the startup programs lined up there, I still can’t bring myself to uncheck any as I fear I might mess up my computer in the process. There just are too many executables there, most of which have non-descriptive names, e.g. ctfmon, ati2evxx, vilaunch, etc. Although I hate the slow startup, I may have to endure it.

well you can always look at the path and find out where the EXE originates from, if are still unsure, google the process and find out what it does, in some cases it could be malware too, thanks for the feedback!
