Want to Know Your Connection’s Real Speed?

With Google and several other services looking to take virtually all your computer usage online, your internet connection speed is going to be one of the most important factors to consider, in recent times, with the introduction of several new communication technologies, internet speeds have been on the rise and thus becoming more economical, while this strongly depends on your geographical location, wherever you are, you’d notice your ISP providing faster internet packages while lowering their prices.

However, is your internet speed really as fast as your ISP advertises it to be? Sometimes, software or games that utilize the Internet require you to configure your internet connection’s speed for optimized performance, this is another reason to know your internet connection’s real speed (the other would be to sue your ISP!).

The best way to get a more accurate idea of what your internet connection speed is using a service called SpeedTest. While the service is given a boring and very matter of fact name, it does exactly what you need it to. It estimates your exact internet connection speed and in my opinion makes an estimation that is more accurate than what your ISP tells you.

The site has a flash based interface and maintains several servers across the globe to determine your internet speed. Once the site is loaded, it automatically identifies servers near your location and suggest a ‘recommended’ (the closest) server to determine your internet speed.

I really like speedtest as well. It also shows me if I have a connection issue because it compares my average times vs other people using the same isp.

When I first got my internet, I had ordered the highest speed package, but when the technician installed the internet, it was on a slower speed, I had noticed this being that I am savvy with the computer and told the technician, but he played it off like nothing was wrong with it, but I knew better, since I used the speed test website, I called up my ISP Company and they were able to fix the issue, and my speed was running 3x faster=D Lucky for me that I know about computers, I’d imagine that there are alot of people getting slower internet connection speeds without even knowing it.

    Till then,

    Jean

Whenever my internet speed slows down and this happens with our Cox service I quickly go to Speed Test and then I call customer service. It still doesn’t help but I feel better having lodged a complaint.
