Rating Description

  • Interface

Simple interface, uses the system’s visual styles. Uses a tabbed style and menu based interface as well.

  • Ease of use

Easy to use application supporting drag ‘n’ drop functionality and inbuilt search capabilities for popular torrent sites. Tabbed-interface placed at the bottom of the main window displays all required information making it easier for the user.

  • Memory Usage

Consumes very little memory. takes barely any time to initialize. Takes up from 1- 5MB of memory.

  • Popularity

Probably the most popular P2P application available.

  • No. of bugs

Contains virtually no bugs

  • Speed

Download speed varies but is generally steady. While download speeds could be faster when compared to a download manager, the BitTorrent network is generally known to be a bit slow.

  • Web User Interface

The Web User interface of utorrent was introduced recently but it is still quite stable and works just like the program would.

  • Bandwidth Cooperation

When customized for unlimited bandwidth (default) the program could be a bit harsh with other internet based programs specifically web browsers, but its bandwidth limiting preference works flawlessly so could be customized accordingly.

  • Privacy

The ‘boss-key’ feature of utorrent ensures privacy.

Other Details

Badware free?

The application is totally badware free but as we all know using P2P networks there is always a vulnerability in terms of viruses and spyware.

Application Size (Standalone) – ~175KB – One of the other main distinctive features of the program.

Overall (5/5):

One of the best P2P programs currently available.

P.S. Using P2P networks to download illegal copies of software is a harsh thing to do for the software developers who spend countless number of hours to develop an application. Don’t use P2P networks to download illegal software.

BitTorrent network is generally known to be a bit slow!!
Try downloading ubuntu or openoffice to check speeds.
Normal torrents only slow because poor seeds/peers.

With utorrent 2.0 (currently RC version) UDP tracker support & uTP protocol is added.
With uTP there are several advantages.
      * Normal web browser internet speed do not slow down when downloading torrents. Only utorrent gets slowed. (Because you use the UDP Internet protocol instead of TCP/IP.)
      * You can send\recieve more data using the same bandwidth. (TCP’s packet size is larger than UDP’s.)
      * Because the uTP protocol is closed-source, ISP’s don’t know how to block torrents. (No more bittorrent throttling.)

I guess normal browser not being slowed by utorrent’s bandwidth will be a big win. usually, utorrent working on full speed makes it virtually impossible to surf.
