I turned off dofollow a long time ago. It actually started when I redesigned the site and it was off for a time. I actually got cursed at by people claiming I somehow misled them because my link was included in some “super secret” list of high pr blogs w/ do follow going around the internet.

Sorry, it isn’t a right. And none of my actual readers seemed to care.

So I took it off and have been quite happy not having my comment box cluttered w/ “nice post” type comments from people only looking for the backlink to an irrelevant site.

great comment! exactly, with the nofollow back on, the ‘great post’ comments and also the usual spam have reduced a lot and moderating comments take a lot less time thus i have more time creating content and marketing the site. i think commentluv plus top commentators is good enough exposure for the commentators. thanks for the comment once again!

I for one completely agree on the enabling back the “nofollow” attribute on the comments. Personally I think that having just the “top commentators” as a way to reward commentators is more than enough. There is no need to go any further by having all the comments as “dofollow”. And plus by you putting back the nofollow tag, it will help strengthen your website, which in the end is what really matters.

On my personal blog, I run a top commentators widget, and I accept all comments that are genuine, but I really hate the ones that just say “great post” that add no value to my blog.

I used akismet for a while but the false positives issue resulted in losing valuable comments from commentators every now and then if i happen to miss it in the pile of spam, spam karma on the other hand has a smaller or even negligible ratio of false positives.

you can use Akismet to prevent spam its free

As for myself, I am perfectly content with the performance I have received out of Akismet.
