Take Your Bookmarks (and passwords) Wherever You Go

Google’s long term goal of taking all your computer tasks online  is currently in progress. Of course, the successful completion of this would make things a lot more convenient, location, hard disks, backups, etc. would no longer matter. You’d have all your files wherever you go. In the meantime, it’s great to have atleast some of your data accessible in a similar fashion, having your bookmarks synchronized online can be a real time saver, and the best part it works on three of the main browsers, Firefox, (the undeserving) Internet Explorer and Safari as well for the Mac lovers.

Xmarks (formerly known as Foxmarks) lets you synchronize all your bookmarks with an online Xmarks server so you’d have all your bookmarks with you wherever you might want to surf the net. Once the addon is installed (Firefox, IE or Safari), you need to create an account and each time you add a bookmark it’s synchronized  with the Xmarks server. You can then visit the Xmarks website, login and you’ll have all your bookmarks arranged in the same folder structure as you had it stored on your browser.

Another great addition to their features has been the password synchronization as well so you no longer have to remember an infinite number of passwords for all the different sites you signed up with. This might make some users a little ‘edgy’ as passwords are highly sensitive data, so depending on how paranoid you are you could synchronize both or just the bookmarks.

It also provides a few extra features, like similar site suggestions, this is a great feature to find similar websites in your area of interest.

Currently I use Xmarks to just synchronize my bookmarks only, on my Firefox. I might have made use of the service a couple of times maybe when I’ve surfed the net on a shared computer and it’s been a real life saver when I needed it.
