Seven Ways to speed up your PC

Is your PC upgraded to the max but still as slow as hell? Then you’ve come to the right place. Here are 7 ways to increase the speed of your pc; once you optimize and follow all these steps you’ll notice your PC is much faster than before.

  • Free up space on your hard drive

The main reason for your computer to get slow overnight is the lack of space in your hard drive. Specifically the main system drive (by default the ‘C’ drive). Keep at least 20% or 2.5 GB free. A better solution would be to partition your hard drive in such a way that your ‘C’ drive should contain around 5GB and reserved for just the operating system and software, files should be saved on the other drives.

  • Manage your applications

The number of applications you use also determines the speed of your computer. If you have tons of software on your hard disk you’ll notice that your computer runs slower whether you use them or not. In most cases with the number of free software available online people keep downloading and installing them and that’s it, they don’t ever use them. See for yourself, open addremove programs right now and you’ll be sure to find at least one program you don’t use.

  • Manage the type of applications you use

We all know that all software don’t behave the same way, while some software takes virtually no memory others need a lot of memory to run. Choosing the correct type of software is vital, in terms of the speed of your PC. Once you make the necessary adjustments in software your PC will run much smoother. A good example is the anti virus software you use. While Norton Anti-Virus requires a lot of memory Kaspersky takes up much less memory.

  • Get rid of the annoying badware

This is not an easy task and the problem is these ‘badware’ (viruses & spyware) just don’t give up. So it would be worth paying a few bucks to get a really good anti spyware & anti-virus software. Also in some cases the anti virus software might do more harm than the viruses itself in terms of speeding up your pc if it is very heavy on the system. A good anti virus program would be Kaspersky Anti-Virus and a good anti-spyware software would be Ad Aware or Spyware Doctor.

  • Lose the fancy themes

There are thousands of people obsessed with themes, visual styles and so on. While your computer might look nice with the new Vista Transformation pack installed on your system, using your computer won’t be a very ‘nice’ experience, and this applies to all other themes available as well. Removing the upgraded visual style you’ll notice an instant increase in your computer speed. The best theme to use would be the default theme, or better still the Windows ‘classic’ theme. While wallpapers and screensavers slow down your computer a bit as well, this decrease in speed is pretty much negligible.

  • Format your computer often

While formatting a computer every month harms your system, formatting your computer at least once in 6 months will keep your computer running faster and more efficiently. Click the link above to learn how to format a computer step-by-step.

  • Clean up the registry & hard disk often

The registry is a vital part of your computer system and maintaining it and making sure it does not contain any dead entries is important to keep you pc running smoothly and in turn at its optimum speed. You don’t have to know much about the registry for this. There are many applications available which does the cleaning for you. One such shareware application is TuneUp Utilities. It contains a suite of applets, included with it is a registry cleaner, disk cleaner & disk ‘doctor’ which detects errors on your hard drive and corrects them. After running these applets you’ll find your PC running much faster. TuneUp utilities is one example, there are many other freeware applications available as well which is just as good.

After optimizing your computer based on the 7 steps above you’ll notice your PC running much faster than before.
