Registry Tweak – Enabling/Disabling the Display properties

Here is a registry tweak which you could use to disable your display properties. First of all read this post on how to backup the registry, it is always important to backup the registry before modifying it just in case.

I will describe how to perform this tweak in a few steps.

1.Open the registry – Open Start > Run > Type ‘regedit’.
2.Locate the location in the registry to place the data – In the left Tree-view windows navigate to“HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem” if any of the keys (directories) are missing create it. If they are all there skip to step 4

3. Create a key – if for example “Policies” is missing, right click “current version” and select new key.

4. Right-click “System” and select new DWORD value.

5. Rename the value to “nodispcpl”.

6. Double click the value and type 1 for the value data.

7. Close the registry, now test it.(you might have to restart the computer first)

8. Open Desktop > Right-click > Properties, If you get a message saying that the display properties have been disabled by your administrator, the tweak was successful.

9. To enable the control panel again, open the registry and delete the value or replace the value data with “0”.

This tweak is particularly useful if you wish to limit any other users altering your computer’s settings, also some viruses disable this feature just to cause some trouble to the host computer, using the above steps you can enable your display properties again.

Alternatively you can use Disk Heal and perform this same tweak by just ticking off a single check box.

I think they did it on all our school computers.

Another use is setting horrible background pictures then disabling it. Then hoping they don’t know how to right click – set as background.

Just make sure you backup your reg file before you make any changes to it. I’ve learned this hard way and I’ve managed to destroy my o/s before but not backing up.

Thanks for the suggestion, i’ll look into different ways of presentation. Right now i’m pressed for time and implementing new features such as these requires more time and effort than a text based explanation. Thanks for the comment once again.
