Laser printers are no doubt the best type of printers in comparison with the different printers available in terms of efficiency as well as quality of output, however they do have a downside as well.
Pros
- Laser printers are ‘page’ printers, which is the main advantage of a laser printer, its speed, page printing allows a fast printing rate. This makes laser printers very efficient.
- The use of electrophotography results in a very high quality of output
- While noise pollution may not be too much of an issue it can reduce productivity in a work place, laser printers respect this issue as they are very silent in operation.
- They have other handy features which ensure user-friendliness like self printing which allows documents to be printed without supervision based on its design.
Cons
- With the benefits, it is typical that laser printers are a lot more expensive to purchase.
- The fact that laser printers produce fast, quality output results in a hardware device that is relatively bulky thus takes up quite a bit of desk space.
- They do not support multi-part printing as they are non-impact printers, i.e. more than one paper cannot be printed at one particular time.
- They are known to be quite expensive to repair as well so the overall investment whether it’s over a long-term period or not is high.
- Based on the technology they use, laser printers are a hazard to the ozone layer as well as the high voltages result in the generation of small amounts of ozone.
- Some of the laser printers are also known to emit particles that are suspected to cause respiratory diseases.
Well those are some of the pros and cons of a laser printer, if you are planning on going for a printer or frustrated with your existing one you might want to check the above out first before you purchase your new printer.

Good post. I recently had to buy a printer for my bureau and I bought ink jet printer. I needed lan port and it cost me 150$ rather than $300 for a laser one. I don’t print too much so I don’t care about cost of toners.

LAN based ones seem quite a lot cheaper, not sure why that is. But if your running a business and need a few printers then LAN is the way to go, simply set up a print server and link all your printers to it.

Problem with that is if the pc goes down so does your printer. Its better to use a wireless network printer so that your pcs can connect to it directly, that way it is not dependent on a server as it is its own.

Good point there Laura, thanks for the input.

Another con is the smells, which is thought to be very bad for our health as the microscopic particles lodge themselves in our lungs. Having the same effect as smoking.

great point there samuel! however as newer laser printers are released, these issues pretty much sorted.
