Rating Description

  • Interface

Features the basic browser interface, allows bookmarks in toolbar and supports skins. Uses tabbed browsing.

  • Ease of use

Very easy to use, supports custom search engines with Google, Yahoo! & other popular website search engines built in. easy navigation with bookmark toolbar capability. Simple non-technical phrases used in preferences. The latest 3.5 build has support to tear away tabs into windows and a dedicated ‘add tab’ button along with other features to make it a lot more user-friendly.

  • Memory Usage

Consumes a reasonable amount of memory. Takes a considerable while to load. Consumes more memory as number of tabs opened increases. The main negative point behind the browser. Mozilla has addressed this issue seriously and future beta builds load a lot faster and consume less memory.

  • Popularity

Gained popularity in recent times, reserving places in the ‘top downloads’ list in some software sites, and using advertising as well. The launch of Firefox 3 was brought about with much buzz after setting the Guinness World record as well.

  • Browsing speed

Excellent browsing speed, partly because of the efficient caching system it uses. Also the latest 3.5 version, has several improvements to its rendering engine, thus resulting in faster load times.

  • Compatibility

Supports most websites, renders most web pages perfectly in comparison to the more popular Internet Explorer.

  • Privacy

Allows deleting of all temporary files in just one click and maximizes privacy with options like ‘clear private data on exit’. Also the latest 3.5 version brings ‘private browsing’ which lets you launch a completely private session where no personal or private data is saved.

  • Plug-ins & add-ons

Supports flash and other plug-ins though should be downloaded externally. Firefox also has an impressive inventory of user powered addons with support to perform virtually any task from within your browser.

Overall (5/5) – In my opinion, Firefox is the best browser to date, taking individual features it may fall short (Chrome to speed for example) however based on overall features I could safely say Firefox outperforms its competitors.
