Rating Description

  • Interface

Uses a general browser interface, contains menus, uses similar icons to internet explorer, choice of fonts could have been better. By default the interface looks a bit ‘crowded’.

  • Ease of use

Like most other browsers, Maxthon is quite is easy to use as well, ‘feature-rich’ as the browser describes itself, also supports handy features like mouse gestures (performs actions based on specific, pre-defined movements of the mouse), an adblocker, screen capture and a probably exclusive inbuilt feature known as web sniffer (allows you to download videos from sites like YouTube). For more information on all Maxthon’s features click here.

  • Memory usage

As it uses IE’s engine, it consumes about the same memory as IE, which is quite good.

  • Popularity

Has got considerably popular in recent times in software portals and forums.

  • Price

As most other browsers, Maxthon is totally free as well.

  • No. of bugs

No noticeable bugs detected

  • Browsing speed

Similar to that of IE. Contains a feature known as ‘Maxthon smart acceleration’ which claims to increase speeds of frequently visited sites, I suspect the technology behind this is store the frequently visited sites’ images and repeated text in the cache.

  • Compatibility

As it uses IE’s engine it is compatible with most sites.

  • Privacy

Contains a simple applet which allows you to clean all private data in one click along with configurable privacy options as well.

  • Plug-ins and add-ons

Another distinctive feature of Maxthon are the plug-ins it has ranging from feed readers to weather tools. Check out all the plug-ins here

Other details

The application comes in two versions, classic and normal, classic being more popular because of the less memory consumption and simplicity. The above review is based on both versions.

Overall (4/5):

An efficient feature-filled browser which could be used as an alternative to IE
