The birth of photoshop has pretty much revolutionized photography so much so that it’s commonly used as a verb today. Images too ‘awesome’ to be true are usually accused of being ‘photoshopped’ and I guess that pretty much sums up what Adobe Photoshop can do for you.
In short, photoshop is pretty much an image creation, modification and enhancing tool, the fact that it can render the saying ‘seeing is believing’ useless is what makes this application so powerful. The only little issue here is, it will cost you a good $1000 to purchase the application.
Using the application alone, you could launch your very own logo creation company for example, in this case, if you are looking to use the application on such a commercial level it is well worth the investment. However if you are a newbie looking to toy around it’s features and create some Photoshop magic it’s not really a wise investment.
Thankfully, there’s GIMP, GIMP is a free and open source alternative that is actually somewhere there in terms of features to compete with Photoshop as a free alternative. Thanks to the open source status it boasts, it is backed by community and is quite a seasoned app to use as an alternative to photoshop.
While it doesn’t offer (obviously) just as much customization and quality, it can get you somewhere there. Looking at features, it offers all the basic functions of an image editing tool in terms of effects and customization. Their official website is equipped with a wealth of information in the form of tutorials to achieve all your graphic needs. There’s also Gimp-tutorials.net which provides tutorials on creating very impressive graphics with the application.
The plugin directory also has numerous scripts to extend the functionality of the application. With a little bit of help from the community and mastering some of the tutorials online, it is in fact possible no doubt, to design mind blowing graphics comparable to Photoshop with GIMP as well, Good Luck!

the GIMP software is good (goofy name, but good software.) I’ve also been happy with my older copy of Photoshop elements. It runs fine on my old PC and does all I need it to.

Gimp is free, but if others are looking for a cheaper option compared to Photoshop, a program called “Photo shop Pro” which I have myself, is pretty decent, and can get the job done.
Till then,

I’ve heard wonderful things about GIMP. It’s something to look at if you can’t afford the outrageous Photoshop price tag.
