How to protect your CD’s and DVD’s

Author: luq | Files under hardware, tips

As promised in this post, here I will describe some of the practices you should adopt to lengthen your optical disk’s life.

  • Use cases

While this is obvious, the importance of using CD cases cannot be stressed enough. Using CD cases cuts down a variety of damages that can result in your CD getting unreadable or corrupt.

    • Protect both sides of your disc

In most cases, as the shiny side is used to store data, care is not taken to keep the printed side safe, this is a wrong idea, both sides have to be kept clean as both sides are used to read a CD.

      • Keep away from dust

Don’t store your CD’s or DVD’s near dusty areas, particles that may settle on your CD could result in it getting unreadable even if removed later on with a cleaning agent.

        • Protect from magnetic fields

While it’s rare that your computer would be kept around magnetic fields make sure that they are away from magnetic fields at any cost. Data corruption in this case leaves no trails and it looks like a human who has died off natural causes.

While these methods can help protect data on CD’s and DVD’s a bit, in the long-term this matters a little as disk failure is inevitable a good practice is to store multiple backups if the content stored on your disks are critically important.
