GIF images are the image files you see that usually animate. They are created using several static frames (just like any other motion picture) and used in websites for banners and other web based representation as they are very lightweight. Sometimes, however websites that support using images for some reason (maybe an avatar) don’t support the animation in the GIF file, in this case the first frame maybe used as the image or GIF files won’t be allowed altogether. You might however prefer to use another frame in the file.
This would be one case where you’d need to separate a GIF animation into frames, there maybe other situations, in any case, GifSplitter (Windows, freeware) as the name suggests, is an application that performs this feature. All you need to do is assign an output directory for the split images and ‘split now’.
If you prefer a web based application or use a Mac or Linux OS you could also use the online GIF splitter from gifninja.com. If you know a similar application that performs this function be sure to share it in the comments.
