Ever downloaded a file online in some weird format without any instructions on how to open the file? Or maybe, you found a file somewhere on your hard disk which hasn’t been assigned to a program but for some reason (maybe the file takes up a lot of disk space) you are curious about it. It can be hard to track down a program to open a file if you don’t know what the file is in the first place, of course you could do some googling, however it still maybe hard to find as you might not know how to phrase your search or perhaps the file type is very uncommon that there’s no real help available online.
Thanks to OpenWith.org you can easily identify which program opens a particular file extension. It features an online database with thousands of file extensions, their description and an appropriate program to open the file. You could either search for an unknown file type you want to open from within the site, or to make things even more convenient the website has a desktop tool (Windows) so that you can just right click the unknown file and select an option to have the tool download an appropriate program for you instantly.
If you look for a file extension and it cannot be found in the database, the developers would be notified and the database would be updated shortly with relevant information to open the file. (or so they promise.)
