It’s kind of strange that a blog in the ‘Computers and The Internet’ niche is making its first mention on Google Chrome, since I failed to write a post atleast an hour after it was officially announced, Ii thought it would be a better idea to talk about Chrome once the whole buzz about ‘Google has just released a browser’ in the blogosphere and the Internet has settled a bit.

I doubt you wouldn’t be aware of Google Chrome, if you use any of Google’s services or visit websites that use Google Adsense (which collectively would cover almost all Internet users), you would have heard of Google Chrome. Google Chrome or Chrome for short is a web browser Google recently launched. The launch was kind of ’sloppy’, with a ‘leaked’ issue of a comic that Google was supposed to introduce Chrome and its features in.

The browser’s main highlight is its speed. Apart from that, its pretty much minimal in terms of features. It’s interface consists of the standard browser style, navigation buttons and other browser elements positioned similar to any other browser. By default it also offers a start page with most visited website and thumbnails for those websites similar to the Speed Dial Firefox Addon.

Google was initially launched as a beta version and came out of beta recently. Almost, immediately Chrome has grabbed a piece of the browser share pie, mainly from Firefox (this makes sense as Firefox users would be more likely to try a new browser than IE users who prefer to stick with the ‘default’). Almost all Google’s income is off contextual advertising and with the current economic crisis i’d say it’s a smart move for Google to release their own browser as to reduce revenue shared with Firefox currently.

Also another highlight of Chrome is its security, each separate tab is treated as a separate process in case of any malware or security threat on the browser, which would only cause the infected tab to be shutdown while the rest of the browser functions normally.
Currently, Chrome does not support extensions, however future plans for Chrome include an extension API. The browser works on all versions of windows, future builds are being developed for Mac and Linux as well.
Based on my experience, i’d say Chrome is a notch faster than Firefox but considering i’ll have to be crippled off all the addons I use with Firefox to have my surfing time only a little bit more productive, i’d rather stick with Firefox. (until maybe that API is released and all the extensions i need are developed for Chrome as well)

what seems to be the problem with gmail? The ‘technical difficulties’ problem? I used to have that for quite a while over the past few days, but now thankfully it has stopped.

Right now, I’m staying with Vista. I’m one of the few that have not had problems with it. But check back in three months. My luck may run out.

I do not like the fact google keeps track of every thing you do with chrome online. Firefox works fine so why switch until google makes something far better than it.
