Have a Gmail Account? Turn it into a Hard Drive

Gmail is arguably the best mail service, with its simplicity and speed of execution of its features. The other striking factor is the massive 7GB+ storage space (and counting) which only a few would ever really utilize completely (I am currently using 0% on two of my main Gmail accounts).

Gmail Drive (Windows) is a tiny utility (a shell extension to be precise) that integrates your Gmail account in your My Computer as a ‘drive’. It lets you manage your Gmail account by entering your credentials after which you may manage your Gmail account with folders just like any other drive.

Personally, I think it’s a great idea as it keeps your files safe and provides 7GB (I know it’s not much, but still) of space on Google’s very reliable servers which can be accessed from your Gmail inbox (When you upload a file via Gmail Drive it’s sent to your Gmail inbox). As the site suggests if you use the ‘drive’ on a constant basis it may clutter your inbox so you might want to create a filter and spare them from the inbox and mark them with a label instead for easy access or to the archive.

Gmail Drive requires Internet Explorer (sigh) and installs without a fuss. One hickup with the app is when you search files on your computer via My Computer, it tries to login to the Gmail Drive as well which could cause the search to hang, other than that it’s quite a neat idea and application for that matter.

Seriously though, how can anyone be so stupid to let a data crow like google search their computer? Privacy concerns anyone? I would also object agaisnt online storage of any critical information. I mean do you ask some corporation to keep your credit card and driver’s license because you are too lazy to carry it around in your pocket?

Wow gmail is already up to 7 GB? I remember just a few years ago, Google was breaking grounds with it’s 1 GB inbox limit, hehe.

    Till then,
