Surfing on a shared computer? Whether it’s at home or in a net cafe it’s still a hassle to use a ‘new born’ browser or a browser with sites in the bookmark toolbar which has nothing to do with you or the browser with the most hideous theme installed. Furthermore, without your own personalized browser your time of surfing will be less productive as you have to type in the URL to websites you frequently visit and have to login each time to login protected pages instead clicking on a toolbar icon and using the built in password manager or easier yet, remember your login details so you go straight to your logged in page.
Portable applications are pretty much becoming a standard feature with most applications today, several of the popular software have a separate portable version which differs in the standard version usually by saving the application settings in an ‘INI’ file instead of in the registry.
Portable application doesn’t necessarily have to be used if you need the applications to be used elsewhere on a different computer, even if it’s your own computer shared with others or a family computer you could benefit from these software and this is exactly how you could use your very own Firefox on a shared computer.
You can download a portable version of Firefox from the popular PortableApps, extract it anywhere on your hard drive or personal external drive and you are ready to go, you now have your own personalized version of Firefox with the bookmarks, extensions and a theme you’d prefer.
Once you are done, just exit without any concern of private data as it’s all stored in that version of Firefox and the other users would have the usual Firefox untouched by you. One of the things to note is that two separate Firefox versions (the portable one and the installed one for example) cannot be simultaneously run.

I think that portable applications will gain more popularity in the future, as there will become more applications and on shared computers, like the ones from the internet cafes, could not be installed the application that you need, so people would just create a usb flash with their favorite portable applications.

I used to love portable apps when I was in High School and everything was blocked. I would bring in portable chat programs, firefox, everything. Not only were they good for being counterproductive but like as you stated in the post, they really helped me with productivity because I could save all my bookmarks for the projects I was researching.

yeah, portability is pretty much becoming a native feature in latest software builds, thanks for sharing your opinion. as for bookmarks, you could have used xmarks too which synchronizes all bookmarks online on the xmarks server, firefox addon of course.

Hey this is really neat. I really hope that the next Firefox is as fast as they say it is. It might finally convince me to give up Chrome.
