<sarcasm>Whoa, who would’ve thought right.</sarcasm> If you’ve observed Google’s main services, you’ll notice a similar pattern, it’s all geared towards shifting all your day to day computing tasks online. Take Docs, spreadsheets, Gmail, Picasa and Youtube, all these ‘apps’ have taken our documents, video and images online.
The recent announcement of the Google Chrome OS states that it will be available later this year as a free downloadable open source version. Initially geared towards netbooks with x86 and ARM based processors. The interface and the OS will be built with a minimalist approach with simplicity and speed in mind, to get you started up and online as fast as possible.
Based on their announcement, you’d guess that Google’s eventual goal is to take your entire computer usage online. I am guessing default handlers for spreadsheets and documents would be Google’s web based apps Docs and Spreadsheets. You will no longer have to worry about location, taking backups or running out of disk space as everything would be stored online on Google’s servers.
While we are looking several years into the future, it’s going to happen. The open source factor of the Chrome OS would contribute greatly towards Google achieving its goal. You can read more about it below:

I think that this is a response to Microsoft’s new search engine launch – bing.

What I foresee to this is this… it’s going to be hard for Google, I think mainly the computer knowledgeable people will be the main ones that will likely be able to use their OS, unless they make it easy enough for the simpler people…. they won’t reach the levels that Microsoft is doing with their Windows series. I mean look at at Linux… it’s awesome for sure… I have a Linux partition on this computer… but not alot of people know how to install even the simplest Operating system install such as Windows. So it’s tough you know… Just look at the browser wars… Internet Explorer is terrible… but it still is the most popular because of the simplicity for users that it is already there on their operating system, and they don’t know any better.
Sorry for my rant… but on a positive note… I am looking forward to the OS release =D
Till then,
Jean

yeah, thanks for the feedback, of course its going to be a while before they catch up with the market share, i am pretty sure they’d start to compete with linux soon though, the fact that it’s from Google and is open source would give them the edge, not to forget, i am expecting them to promote it via a text link on google.com as well.

I have used Ubunutu for year (also Linux based). I look forward to Google’s offering but really I want them to hurry up and make the Chrome browser available for Linux.
