Does Limewire Cause Viruses?

Limewire has revolutionized the World by making media illegally available for free for anyone with an internet connection and controlling the wealth of celebrities. With the ‘too good to be true’ scenario for people discovering about Limewire for the first time, naturally they tend to lean towards skepticism questioning the motives of such a program.

limewire

Digging in deeper, to their expectations they find several users and articles claiming that limewire is a wasteland for viruses and porn and  malware. The truth is these users and webmasters posting these claims are too dumb for their own good. Limewire does not harbor hordes of viruses into your system but it can be tricky for retarded new users who download a movie which is 445KB.

So, in short Limewire in itself does not infect your computer with viruses or any malicious software, however the network has tons of fake files that maybe viruses, here are a few things to keep in mind when downloading a file on Limewire:

  • Watch the file size of the file you download, use a bit of common sense, an mp3 file for example should be in between 2-10MB depending on bitrate and length.
  • Watch the file name of the file you download, if the file name is the exact same name as what you searched for, you might want to double check with the file size to be sure.
  • EXE files and porn usually have viruses bundled with them.
  • Use a good  antivirus program with real-time protection.

If you keep the above three points in mind you should be safe with Limewire.

Thanks for confirming that the limewire app in itself does not have a virus or worm in it. I’ve always been cautious in installing these things at the expense of not being able to avail of a lot of downloadables free for the taking out there.

I guess I’ll just have to stay away from exe, msi and other files that requires installation to run.

As long as you’re using the net, you’ll always be at risk of getting viruses. What more with P2P programs?

Is limewire still prominent at all? I would have thought torrents would be all the rage by now.
