How to disable the ‘Run’ Dialog

The Run dialog allows access to virtually any application and command in your computer. If your computer is shared with other users or if you do not use the ‘Run’ command it is a good idea to turn it off. Below is a simple procedure on how to disable the ‘Run’ dialog.

Disable Run

Setting this preference requires you to modify the registry. Make sure you read this post on how to backup and use the registry if you are not familiar with it.

I’ll explain how to make the change in a series of steps:

Open the registry – Open Start > Run > Type ‘regedit’.

Locate the location in the registry to place the data – In the left Tree-view window navigate to “HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer” if any of the keys (directories) are missing create it. If they are all there skip to step 4.

How to create a key – if for example “Policies” is missing, right click “current version” and select new key.

Right-click “Explorer” and select new DWORD value.

Rename the value to “norun”.

Double click the value and type 1 for the value data.

Close the registry and restart your computer.

Check if the modification worked by navigating to Start>Run.

To reverse this modification edit the key to a value of ‘0′ or delete the key.

Alternatively you can use Disk Heal and perform the same task by just checking an option.

Instead of locking tell us some way to unlock this feature if admin has disabled the run command option.
