Who cares if the URL is a million characters long right? Wrong. Venture Capitalists would fund $2 Million dollars for a service that would shorten URL’s and make it cleaner to present.
Still, while it’s really no big deal, it’ always nice to do some house cleaning and keep your blog shiny. Thanks to the WordPress plugin community there’s a simple plugin that lets you create clean URL redirects out of your blog. GoCodes lets you redirect all your URL’s into a cleaner yoursite.com/[common term like "go"]/[Keyword for URL]. If you notice the common term maybe specified, by default it’s configured as “go” and then the next part is used to identify and describe the link it redirects to.
So for example, I’ve configured http://www.computer-realm.net/go/google to redirect to http://www.google.com. It also allows tracking of hits to the cloaked link. The plugin is very straightforward and does its job IMO.
This would be a great eye opener for Affiliate marketers as well, GoCodes could be efficiently used to cloak affiliate links which is one of the main ‘tweaks’ used in the affiliate marketing game.

Good points on shortening the URL – especially for affiliate marketing. People are far less ‘suspicious’ clicking on a link that looks like it is just another page on your site, as opposed to one that is clearly an affiliate URL – hugely long etc.
We’ve just developed a little plugin (URL Rotator) that does something similar to GoCodes, except that it isn’t limited to one directory, and you can add .php or .html to the redirect codes as well. In addition, for affiliate marketers, you can rotate between multiple offers and settle on the one you like best.
