You can’t talk about Twitter enough, Twitter is a classic example of viral marketing, based on how Twitter became popular and how stories can spread on Twitter. The growth of Twitter and ‘tweeting’ or ‘twittering’ has also brought about certain ‘code of ethics’ when using the social network. One of the main ‘rules’ behind the service happens to be how people are followed, many users believe that following should be mutual, however there is no real way to know if following is mutual or not unless you don’t get more than just a couple or more followers a day so that you could manually check them.

Thanks to Twitter’s very flexible API though Huitter has a service known as Mutuality that lets you follow everyone that follows you and unfollow everyone that doesn’t by just entering your twitter credentials. I use the service frequently and it’s yet to disappoint.

It also allows you to exclude certain Twitter usernames for the (un)following process.

Twitter is currently pretty much the most hyped social network. While recent study show that Twitter is not as active as it appears, it is still steadily growing and there are no symptoms by the community yet to indicate any apathy towards the service.

Twitter revolves around two way communication where followings are usually reciprocated among twitterers and the best way of keeping track of who follows you is via the native feature of their email notifications whenever someone follows you, and sometimes you might find your inbox filled with these notifications.

While this might turn out to be difficult to manage it is required all the same to be aware of who is following you so below I have outlined the easiest way to manage these notifications.

This feature is available by most email clients and is none other than the ‘filter’ feature. Below I have outlined how you can do this with Gmail.

Sign into your Gmail account, on the top you should find ‘Create a filter’.

You’ll then be given criteria to set to filter your emails. Now, you are looking to filter all the Twitter notifications into a separate folder, so in the ‘From’ field type ‘Twitter’.

On the next page, you will be provided with a list of options of what to do when an email matches the filter criteria, check the ‘skip the inbox’ field and apply the label ‘Twitter’ to it. You might also want to apply the filter to the existing mails matching the filter criteria, if so tick the box at the bottom.

Once you create the filter all your notifications will now be sent to the ‘Twitter’ label in a separate folder separate from your inbox where you can sift through them at your own pace.

You can setup simlar filters for other email providers as well, below I’ve linked to guides on popular email clients:

Yahoo

Windows Live Mail

And as always, if you run into any trouble, leave a comment below.

Yesterday, I wrote a post on Twitter, while you might be all excited about trying this service after reading the post I suggest you proceed with caution. Currently, there’s a phishing scam in progress. for now it’s been only spreading via direct messages.

If you get a direct message from a random user that redirects to the (apparent) Twitter login page, DO NOT login! It’s probably a mail to phish your Twitter credentials. Currently from what I’ve heard, the description of the direct messages have been asking the user to checkout ‘something funny about you’, and recently about winning a free iPhone or iPod (haven’t we seen that one before!).

But just to be on the safe side i suggest you do not login to Twitter through any DM’s (direct messages) until the phishing phase has passed.

While Twitter is growing fast, security is one of the departments they need to work on. Apart from the current mass phishing attack on Twitter accounts, accounts have also been directly hacked. You can read more on this from these news stories:

Hope this doesn’t deter new users away though, just pay attention when using Twitter, that’s all.
