Apparently Facebook Mobile’s growth is on a steady appreciating curve. Currently 25% of the total users of Facebook access the social network via mobile and this number is predicted to increase in the near future. You can view their entire strategy with mobile networking in this post.

While all this is very impressive, the fact that their standard m.facebook.com mobile version (that is used by 50% of smartphone users counting Nokia devices only that is) sucks doesn’t help their cause. Apparently they have abandoned the development of their standard mobile product.

For starters, any friend that writes a wall post to a mutual friend appears on a friend’s timeline as a status update (i.e. without the recipient) of the aforementioned friend. This obviously can make things a little confusing. Also, Facebook probably handles hordes of bandwidth every second on their standard web product and mobile products but somehow they are looking to cut corners with their light bandwidth standard mobile product. The Recent and News Feed displays around 20-40 of the latest updates which is a tad cheeseparing in my opinion.

While the above two points are the main factors behind my rant, they are major inconveniences that should have been addressed several weeks (or perhaps months?) ago, however I’m baffled that out of 50% of Facebook Mobile users that use the standard m.facebook.com version of the site, I am yet to find anyone complaining on the blogosphere or anywhere for that matter. Maybe it’s just me?

I’ve been covering different topics on networking lately, last week I gave you some of the pros and cons of using networks. Networks are indeed very popular in computer systems today and knowing the ropes behind how they function should come in handy.

There are different types of network transmission, for the most part, networking comprises of two types of data transmission, namely serial and parallel transmission.

Serial Transmission

This is a relatively simple method, where bits are transferred along a single wire to the destination one bit at a time. This method is commonly used where transmission is over long distances, this is a slower method however more efficient relatively. They are usually used to transfer data along different computer systems or to an external device some distance away.

Parallel Transmission

Here bits are sent along several individual wires at a time to the destination, bits are transferred simultaneously. This method is evidently faster as several bits are transferred at a time however this method is suitable when transferring data along short distances only as over long distances the bits tend to muddle up resulting in a failed transfer. Parallel transmission is usually used to transfer data within a computer system (short distance) or maybe to an external device which is at a relatively short distance away.

In a network both methods are effectively utilized to provide maximum efficiency and speed with data transfer, their use is based on the average distance of data transfer, also at certain points along the network, a serial-to-parallel (and vice versa) conversion may occur.

That’s pretty much it when it comes to types of data transmission in a network, there are other aspects like modes and topologies (the sequence at which they are connected) which I will cover later on Computer Realm.

The past month, we touched on certain areas of networking including an introduction to Local Area Networking and also the main contrasting factors in the two main branches of networks, i.e. LAN and WAN. If you take computing in general today, most organizations, the Internet and even individuals on a small scale look to network computers, the reasons behind these are clear, however there is a downside to it as well. Lets take a look at both these below.

Advantages

- In a Local Area Network peripherals like printers maybe shared, this makes it a lot more cost efficient.

- Programs and files maybe shared, this results in a lot more convenience in terms of files and cost again with programs. Several applications (including operating systems) are available in ‘network’ versions meant for several computers on a network and a lot cheaper than individually purchasing and installing the products into each computer individually.

- Communication is increased, with computers networked, emails, IM and VOIP maybe implemented to communicate among the computers on the network.

- As files maybe shared (as stated above) all data maybe centrally stored and accessed on a server keeping all data synchronized and up to date, this allows better data integrity and also a lot more efficiency as data would be stored in only a single place.

- Access rights and security maybe centrally updated from a single ‘primary’ computer making management a lot easier and secure.

Disadvantages

- Due to the ‘connected’ nature of networks, malicious software that may affect a single computer (from a portable device or from the Internet) can be transferred to all the computers in the network which can result in a lot more cost and hassle for the administration.

- Usually, a person with expertise is assigned and required to manage a network.

- Setting up a network can be initially high which may not be compensated with the advantages of peripheral and software sharability.

Those are some of the main pros and cons of setting up and using networks, your feedback along with what you see beneficial or negative in networking would be appreciated below.

We recently gave you an overview of what a LAN (Local Area Network) is, this in combination with WAN (Wide Area Network) would virtually give you the definition of what networks are in the field of computing.

While LAN and WAN are both two branches of networking and share many similarities, there’s a very fine line between them as well, here are some of their main differences:

Difference on the basis of scope: WAN is considered to be more vast and widespread. WAN is meant for networking between wide geographical regions like between two cities or even across different time zones while LAN is mainly used for private connectivity among residential offices or a single edifice. Hence a small scale WAN can be developed by creating many LANs.

Difference on the basis of connections: In case of LAN, Ethernet is the main device which is used for connecting the workstations or the computers. Ethernet is a bus based protocol device in which cables and wires and permanent. Ethernet helps is the interconnection of the different types of LANs. While in the case of WAN, common carriers are usually used and most people opt in for service providers. When it comes to the speed of both the network technologies, a LAN is usually faster as it is confined to a small space with servers in a nearby location.

On the basis of Network Topology: LAN and WAN have different configuration. LAN is based on peer to peer communication where each node is connected to the other node and can share the data and other applications with each other. While WAN is totally based on the client server model where the entire network originates from one central system and is transferred to other nodes according to the requests made.

On the basis of Usage: LAN is mainly used for data and peripheral sharability like the accessing of scanners printers and other peripherals, and the main feature of a LAN is that usage is restricted and controlled among a limited number of people. In the case of WAN, however, it maybe used to conduct business, connect with people on a social level, share files and data, etc.

In the present scenario of the cyber world, everybody wants their data transacted at a very fast pace. They want lightening speed transfer of data from their friend’s computer or in the office. Now, if this were to be followed via a hardware storage device, the process will be a lot time consuming. Networking comes to the rescue here.

Local Area Networking (LAN) is the concept utilized by most organizations, offices, internet cafes etc, when it comes to sharing information with multiple PC’s at the same time. This technology or technique has enabled users to gather data from any computer on their network onto their own computer.

There are special hardware requirements for networking too. People might need specific routers or LAN cards to establish their network. It is best that people participate in a LAN network with a computer strength of 20 to 30.

This is a very efficient model as it does not affect speed and the efficiency of the network in terms of memory sharing is also maintained. Besides, establishing a network is very easy. People only need a networking software, routers, and bridges and they will get their network up and running in no time at all.

While local area networking is not appropriate in a personal space like your home, if there is as much as two computers in a location it would be wise to network your computers, the main pros being the data and hardware shareability and the convenience in transferring data among these computers.

Networking alone cannot be coined by what is explained above, local area networking is one area of networking where a (usually physical) connection is established between computers confined to a small geographical area. The Internet and private networks established by worldwide corporations to handle their data are also networks but are known as Wide Area Networks (WAN).
