Looking For Facebook Themes?

The days of MySpace are over, and with it goes the customization of one’s profile. It’s not a surprise why Facebook does not allow users to customize their profile with themes, graphics, gif’s and other visual effects. The horror stories of MySpace profiles gone wrong reach to the sky and I’m sure that the last thing Facebook wants to happen is someone getting an epileptic shock when they visit someone’s profile.

That said, there are some hacks to get around this “annoyance.” Just like the unofficial Dislike button (Firefox plugin), there are unofficial themes available. However, there is a catch to these themes. Since Facebook does not allow you to modify the CSS or HTML of your profile page, it means that whatever customization’s you make to your profile with these skins will only be visible to you and no one else.

Probably not the answer you wanted to hear, but it is better than nothing at all. In order to get the themes to work, you will have to use a browser plugin. Most skin websites support Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. That being said, the vast majority of the themes follow the idea of MySpace themes. I have listed a few of the sites below.

fbSKins: One of the premier Facebook skin websites, this site carries over 50,000 skins. Best of all, unlike other skin websites which require that you install crapware such as toolbars and the likes, all you have to do is install the plugin and the skins will work.

pageRage: Another website offering free Facebook skins, Page Rage also allows you to create your own skins. They offer premium memberships as well, though I highly doubt that such an option would be of interest to most individuals.

Just remember that whatever theme or skin you decide to use, will only be visible by you. So in the end, it defeats the purpose but for those who are still stuck in the MySpace era, this is for you like chips are to a recovering smoker. Enjoy.

5 Free Windows Applications To Automatically Change Your Desktop Background

We all need variety in our lives, it’s how we are, using the same setup or seeing or doing the same thing over and over leads to monotony and can make things really boring. Well, the same thing pretty much applies to your computer, you see Firefox harboring thousands of user created themes into their inventory for variety, thousands of desktop themes and also skins for many applications are all incorporated to enhance user experience and provide variety.

Well, it would be great to treat your eyes to a different wallpaper every time you login to your computer or after a period of time as well. Below are 5 absolutely free applications for your Windows OS that lets you do just that.

1. Webshots (Windows All)

This is probably the most popular application that lets you rotate and display wallpapers. It lets you display your own personal photos as well as photos directly downloaded from the Webshots website, however these would carry branding of Webshots.

2. Moody Desktop (Windows XP/Vista)

This is another application which lets you rotate wallpapers on each login or based on a predefined time slice. Unlike Webshots, this application is developed solely for this purpose, wallpapers have to be set from your personal collection.

3. John’s Background Switcher (All Windows Except 7 + .NET Framework)

This is another application dedicated to having variety on your desktop background at a frequency you prefer. This application is great as it could automatically display wallpapers from popular photo sharing services like Flickr, Picasa, etc. and display them based on tags. This also allows to randomly rotate background images from your own computer as well.

4. Walyk Wallpaper Changer (Windows 2k, XP, Vista)

This is similar to Moody Desktop and offers the same features, automatically switch wallpapers when you restart your computer or based on a predefined time.

5. Wallpaper Changer (Windows 9x, NT, 2000, XP)

Very matter of fact name and does exactly what it says, lets you change your wallpapers automatically based on a predefined time or each time you restart your computer.

Personally, I don’t use any of these applications but I’d pick John’s Background Switcher and Webshots as my favorites, up to you though, share your take on these apps or suggest similar ones in the comments.

Data Validation

All data entered into a system is validated. Data validation is performed by a computer program. There are a variety of validation methods used on data to ensure accurate entry of data. Let’s look at some of the validation methods used:

Length Checks

In this validation technique, data entered is checked to make sure it is a particular length, for example 4 characters, if it’s greater or less than 4 characters it is detected as an error.

Range Checks

Here data is checked to lie within a specified range as in if integers (numerical values) were entered a range of 10 – 1000 may be specified in which case all entered data must be in between 10 & 1000.

Presence Checks

This is a simple check performed to check if data has been entered into a field, it makes sure required fields are not left blank.

Character Checks (or Character Type Check)

This checks if data entered is a particular character type, for example it may check that a ‘name’ field has only letters.

Check Digit

A check digit is a single digit generated from a complete number, for example an ISBN contains a check digit, the last digit of the ISBN is a check digit. It is calculated using the rest of the numbers in the ISBN, when checked, the check digit is recalculated, if it produces a different value an error has occurred during data transmission or entry.

Hash Totals

Hash totals are meaningless totals calculated using a series of entered records, for example if you find the totals of all the record numbers of a collection of records it is a meaningless total. It could be used as a hash total to validate the records.

Control Totals

This is similar to a hash total except the total is a meaningful one, i.e. instead of totaling record numbers you might total the salaries of the employees in an employee database, this total provides some meaning and it can be used to validate data.

Well the above are some of the checks made when you enter data. So the next time you register for a service online remember most of these checks and maybe even a few more are made on each of the fields you fill in!

Vista fonts on XP

XP users feeling left out in terms of fonts? While websites and documents take on the new vista fonts, you are stuck with the outdated Times New Roman and Comic Sans MS and the rest.

Well, not fair that you can’t use the fonts just because you wanna stick with XP, so I’ll tell you how you can get the Vista fonts.

All you have to do is download the Microsoft Powerpoint Viewer 2007 and install it, and voila the fonts get installed too! The application is free and is just 26MB, worth downloading i think.

Why do you shutdown your computer?

Stupid question? Not when you can hibernate it. Hibernating your computer saves the last position of which your computer was in so that you can continue from where you left off. Apart from that, it effectively switches off and turns on your computer faster than if you shutdown your computer.

To be able to hibernate your computer your system drive (by default drive ‘C’) should contain at least 1GB of free space. Though only 250MB is required for hibernation, leaving your system drive with less than 1GB of free space is not advisable, vacant space in the system drive is used for various other purposes, mainly for temporary storage, for the page file, etc.

While hibernating may have the advantage of loading and turning off your computer faster it does have some drawbacks. In some situations, hibernating may be slower than shutting down your computer; in this case it is advisable to use the normal ‘turn off your computer’ method. Also sometimes once you switch on your computer after hibernating it, it may be slower than usual until you log off and come back on. These problems though won’t be experienced if you have a good RAM.

Try hibernating your pc right now and decide which is better.

Don’t know how to hibernate?

First go to the display properties (desktop>right click>properties)
Go to Screensaver>Power>Hibernate>Check if enable hibernation is ticked.
Go to Start>Turn off your computer and press ‘H’ or hold Shift>and ‘stand by’ would turn to ‘Hibernate’, or if you are using the classic style just select hibernate from the pull down menu.
