Makers of computer games and online programs aimed at the old have been increasing in recent times. Japan’s game producer giant Nintendo has sold 8.6 million copies worldwide of its brain age programs for its Nintendo DS game console.

Nintendo says it makes no specific health claims for Brain age games, but the programs which were developed by Ryuta Kawashima, a Japanese neuroscientist include tasks in memory, math, reading and even music, are “challenging exercises to get users’ brains pumping.” The company says the games are designed to stimulate certain parts of the brain which assists in application of everyday skills.

“The games help you focus and improve your memory skills” says a 67 year old Grandmother, who was given a console and games after participating in the company’s ‘coolest grandparent’ contest.

A doctoral researcher, C. Shawn Green said these visual games help have sharper visual skills that may help in common everyday tasks like driving.

With the new found fortune will video games which are usually known to be by most of the older generation folks to be just a waste of time actually prove them wrong by contributing to better fitness in elders? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Sony cut the price of its Playstation 3 console in the US and announced an even cheaper model that will arrive before the holiday shopping season.

The top-line Playstation 3 model, with an 80GB HD, now costs around 500USD, reduced by around 100 USD that effectively eliminates the lower end model costing 500USD.

Thus, a new lower end model, with a 40GB HD will be in stores in November 2^nd for just around 400 dollars. Unlike the other models this one won’t be able to play playstation 2 game. Sony says, this was due to a more extensive lineup of games for the Playstation 3.This launch was widely expected in the US, after Sony announced it in Japan Europe. It does narrow the price gap compared with the rest of the game consoles though still the most expensive. XBOX 360 costs $350 and the Nintendo Wii costs $250. Sony has sold a whooping 5 million ps3’s since they went on sale in November last year.

You’ll need a PS2 game, computer with DVD drive and VLC.

Insert the PS2 game (any game which has a video in it) into the drive. Open it in my computer. Drag the files (the big ones which are more than at least 100MB) into VLC and VLC just might do the magic. It works most of the time. Some times the first half of it would be just seeking and then it would play. Guess one good thing about this is you can check out videos which are supposed to be unlocked as you play the game at the beginning.
