Bye Bye Top Commentators (Sorry Spammers)

Well, a few months back I disabled DoFollow with the overwhelming comment spam. I still had the Top Commentators plugin to benefit from this site’s page rank, however disabling DoFollow apparently did not help, in fact it made things worse, now instead of a single spam comment targeting a keyword, (mostly long-tail which made it look worse) I’d get multiple comments in order to get to the ‘Top Commentators’ list.

While it’s unfortunate that I have to do this (there were occasional ‘substance’ in the comments even though they were marketing a keyword), I think it will benefit the site and filter out the spammers, give the site a better SEO value overall, and keep things clean.

StumbleUpon Shows Me the Finger

I am a big fan of StumbleUpon, it pretty much gives you a view of the web that Google or any other search engine or service never could, keeping it short, the web’s a lot more interesting with StumbleUpon, I haven’t really talked much about StumbleUpon here on Computer Realm so I think I’ll cover more on it later, for now let’s cut the crap and get to the point.

A few days back I logged into my site stats to find the chart showing me the finger (apparently)! Looking at the referrals, it was none other than StumbleUpon that caused it. StumbleUpon is known to drive massive traffic and give us bloggers and webmasters (short lived) happiness with the massive spikes, I’ve had a few mini spikes from StumbleUpon before but it wasn’t really a landslide or anything, this time around, while it still can get better (around 1000+ visits) comparatively to the potential it has based on other bloggers’ experience, I guess it’s a start.

Oh, and if you are curious which post got ‘hit’, it was the list (who would have guessed) post on 10 signs to determine if you are infected with viruses or spyware.

Introducing Polls

It’s all about competition today, just take the browser wars for example, completely ruling out a particular method, product or service is also not considered ‘fair play’ today and rightfully so, nothing’s perfect, which leads to a lot of turmoil whenever something that has an alternate answer is spoken of. The only real way to consider what is the ‘best’ or ‘most popular’ or ‘greatest’(to keep it more general) would be to side with the majority.

Which is why I’ve decided to incorporate polls on Computer Realm, polls will usually cover topics which have answers that are highly debatable and help our readers conclude something about a topic, product or service. It would also be a great way to engage with the great, growing community here on Computer Realm.

As this is the first time I’m trying something like this I am yet to find out the rate of votes we’d get from you (our visitors), so till then the polls will run until there’s a sizable quantity large enough to compare the results. The polls are created using PollDaddy (more on PollDaddy and incorporating polls on your website soon) and is situated in the right sidebar.

New Theme + Updates

Just following up here, as I said, I’m looking to keep Computer Realm updated once again after quite a long break, I’ve been making the updates I stated in the previous posts over the last few days.

I decided to pick the Passion Duo theme by DailyBlogTips, I was looking for a clean, simple theme with sufficient white space and I guess this theme fits the description. I will also be uploading the previous site template used for Computer Realm Software (which is based on the Langit WordPress theme which was Computer Realm’s previous theme) available for free download shortly.

I’ve also made advertising available, the prices are comparatively very competitive, with CPM’s as low as $0.48. You can find more info on that here. If you have any suggestions, things you’d like to see added on Computer Realm please share it below. Computer Realm has been DoFollow for a while. Sadly, spammers are all out for exploiting DoFollow blogs by leaving comments with different keywords of low quality. With the addition of Computer Realm to several ’100 DoFollow blogs’ lists that percolate the blogosphere it’s been hard work moderating all the legit looking comments and determining if they are to be deleted or approved.

Recently, i’ve been very strict approving comments and now I’ve finally decided to turn off DoFollow. This maybe temporary, I’ll watch how the nature of comments are over the next few days and determine my next move. There’s still the Top Commentators plugin to take advantage of the page rank on this site, however any links within comments have the ‘rel=nofollow’ attribute on them again.

PS – Computer Realm should be in full swing in terms of activity before the end of June. Until then or even after guest posts are still welcome, if you are interested just send me a mail and I’ll be happy to post them if they are of good quality and relevant to the niche of course.

Ever wanted to share a link online? Sure you have! The Internet is filled with content and a good part of it is interesting and worth sharing. Be it on a forum, social network during a chat conversation, via email or anything else. Unfortunately URL’s may not be as convenient to be shared. Based on the script used to run the website URL’s may turn out to be very long and very inconvenient when sharing.

Thanks to LopURL, you can now shorten all your long URL’s into simpler, shorter URL’s ready to be shared. LopURL is a website I just launched to shorten URL’s and redirect them to the original URL. Here’s an example, you can turn this http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=mtM&q=Facebook&btnG=Search to http://lopurl.net/3!The shorter URL quickly and seamlessly redirects to you original longer URL.

Apart from sharing, if you are an affiliate marketer LopURL can be used to hide affiliate (referral) links as well. This is an efficient feature as many users are aware of referral links and sometimes remove the referrer ID before visiting the referral link. With LopURL this can be prevented.

Also, it can be used to shorten ‘mailto:’ links, you can see an example for this as well on the LopURL website.

The name was derived from ‘lop’ which means to ‘cut off from a whole’ as in to ‘cut’ the URL thus lopURL.

Crunch Time

It’s been a while since I last posted. The busy days I was referring to in the ‘Happy ’09‘ post has kicked in. You won’t be seeing another post in the Computer Realm until the end of June the least. In the meantime guest posts are more than welcome. If you can provide unique quality content in the same niche followed in Computer Realm I’d be more than glad to post it as a guest post here on Computer Realm. Computer Realm brings in a steady 400 visitors a day so its a win win situation, unique content for Computer Realm as well as good exposure to your website.

Been a while since I posted, this has partly been since I was busy and also since I’ve been working on a new website. I just launched Freeware Realm a few days back. Moved Again!

Until now Computer Realm was hosted under the GoDaddy Economy hosting package. After almost a year, I figured it’s time to move to a more durable and stable option so I’ve switched to Media Temple’s Grid Server hosting. Four times the price but i guess it’s worth it.

First impressions have been pretty good. My server was instantly ready as their order page promises, FTP is way faster than GoDaddy and support is great as well, received a response for an issue I had in around 20 minutes. I’ll post a complete review after a few months on my experience with MediaTemple.

And I believe Computer Realm is in good company, Techcrunch, Sony and Adobe to name a few who host their websites with MediaTemple.
