Well, in Part 2, I described how to handle Permalinks, Re-directs and Feeds. Here I will provide some plug-ins to get these things done automatically but I advise you to directly modify the htaccess file instead of use as well as some other plug-ins you might want to install when you get started:
This is one of the required plug-ins for wordpress which creates a sitemap for your blog. It also automatically updates each time you write a new post. Just activate the plug-in and forget about it!
The name says it all. This plug-in takes care of SEO for you by taking care of the little things that matter a lot to make your name big in the SERPs. it takes care of tags, URL format, Title formats, NoIndex pages, keywords, descriptions and a lot more. A must have for SEO.
The above two are necessary as it pretty much takes care of SEO for you, here are a few others you might want to use on your blog to maximize user-friendliness to your readers and exposure for your blog:
Well, the fact that it is included with the Wordpress installation says it all! Akismet blocks comment and Trackback spam and it really does! You’ll want to activate Akismet so that you can spend more time blogging than deleting spam comments.
Your blog and its content maybe damage or wiped out completely for a number of reasons, maintaining a backup of your precious blog (comments and posts and everything else that’s needed) is very essential. This plugin as the name suggests, does just that. You can also schedule backups to be made and assign an email address so that backups are made frequently and stored on a different server. You can also download it and store it in your home computer.
This automates the process of editing the htaccess file to re-direct to your custom feed URL, in this case Feedburner only; it does this by replacing the URL to the site feed URL with the Feedburner URL. It does conflict with the re-direct code in your htaccess file which is described in Blogger to Wordpress Part 2.
This allows you to display random posts on your blog’s sidebar. I think this is a great plug-in as it maximizes exposure to all the posts in your blog randomly.
This neatly displays icons to social bookmarking sites (offers a ton of social bookmarking sites to link to which most of us don’t know) . we can select which sites we want displayed and the icons of these sites are all displayed after a post with a title of your choice.
This plug-in is one out of quite a few ‘related posts’ Plug-ins out there. It works perfectly and displays very relevant related posts. It’s also a plug-n-play plug-in keeping your hands clean. Other Related posts plug-ins require to modify the template files manually to make the related posts show up.
Those are some of the plug-ins to get you started with. Of course there are a lot more plug-ins out there, just Google it!
How to install plug-ins
Upload the plug-in in your server’s ‘wp-content/plugins’ directory. Then open your Wordpress dashboard and goto the ‘Plugins’ page. You’ll find the uploaded plug-in there if it was uploaded correctly. Click ‘Activate’. You’re done!
If you are having trouble with the plug-ins please leave a comment. Also if you think there should be other plug-ins ‘to get you started’ with Wordpress let me know.
