Rating Description (for ratings that may require an explanation):

  • Interface

Excellent interface, contains built in skins, allows tray minimizability. Interface arranged in an easy to use manner, using a tab like interface for each video format.

  • Ease of use

Easy to use interface. Contains individual profiles for each video format, in terms of video quality. Custom aspect ratio selection and bitrate could be simply done with features like the bitrate calculator.

  • Memory Usage

Takes up a bit of memory during conversion, making the computer a little slow. Also uses cooperative memory usage, i.e. allowing other programs and tasks to be run but lengthening the time of conversion.

  • Popularity

Not the most talked about in software sites, though achieves good ratings.

  • Price

While 40 dollars may seem a bit too much compared to the price of other software today, AVS video tools is more of a ‘suite’ with 5 applications integrated as one. These 5 separate parts are the Video converter, the ‘smart’ converter, the video cutter, Disc creator, and the manager of all the other parts itself. These separate parts combined with the various conversion formats it supports (see conversion formats supported) and other factors make the $40, worth it.

  • Number of bugs

Excellent program with few or no bugs at all.

  • Time of conversion

Quite fast taking around 150 minutes to convert one DVD movie, (approximately 2 hours in length).

  • Conversion formats supported

Supports all major formats:

(AVI, DVD, MP4, 3GP, MPEG, MOV, WMV, RM & SWF)

Also allows different codec for each file format. (i.e. allows XVID, DIVX, etc. for AVI ;PSP, iPod for MP4,etc.)

Overall (4/5):

While there maybe a few better video editing tools out there, AVS video tools is a powerful tool that supports a lot of file formats, and contains several features making the product a bargain for $40.
