10 Free Tools to Rename Files Effectively

Renaming isn’t really something we focus on so much as to use a dedicated software for it, most operating systems provide renaming on the fly in just a few clicks.  However you might encounter situations where you need to rename multiple files as it is how you organize your files or even to manage your music. I previously wrote a post on how to rename multiple files, here are 10 absolutely free tools that lets you perform a similar set of functions.

Ken Rename is a simple, efficient, free file renaming utility that lets you rename multiple files at once. This includes renaming certain phrases in  several  file names, renaming according to a sequence and several other features.

3. Lupas Rename 2000

Lupas Rename allows you to rename files and folders. It also works using recursive directories and includes Shell Integration. Also features batch rename/undo from a console window, rename from external ANSI files, Multi-language – it currently supports nine languages, and much more.

4. Metamorphose

Métamorphose is a free, open source mass renaming program that combines great flexability with an intuitive interface. Allows many command line renaming operations in a single utility, perfect for those of us that need to rename large numbers of files and/or folders on a regular basis.

5. ReNamer

ReNamer is a small, yet very flexible file renaming tool, that offers all the standard renaming procedures, including prefixes, suffixes, replacements, case changes and more. In addition, it can also remove brackets, add number sequences, remove digits or symbols and change file extensions.

The program allows you to combine multiple renaming actions as a rule set, applying each action in logical sequence, which can be saved, loaded and managed within the program.

Bulk Rename Utility is a utility which allows you to easily rename files and directories, based upon extemely flexible criteria. Add date-stamps, replace numbers, insert strings, convert case, add auto-numbers, process folders and subfolders along with several other features.

7. Advanced Renamer

Advanced Renamer is freeware program for renaming multiple files or folders at once. It can use several different methods for calculating the new name including multimedia tools for sound and picture files.

With Advanced Renamer you can construct new file names by adding, removing, replacing, changing case, or giving the file a brand new name based on known information about the file.

8. Filesman

Filesman is a software very useful for those who work with very big file lists, such as MP3 files or Midi, and want to keep the file names with certain criteria. It often happens working with huge file lists, where some files have uppercase words, other lowercase.

9. Flexible Renamer

Flexible Renamer is a file/folder renaming utility, which can use Wildcard or Regular-Expression and Tag-information (MP3, EXIF) and script (vbs/js).

10. Digital Filename Editor

Digital Filename Editor allows you to rename many files in multiple folders, including photos, xml files, images, and other graphic files. Find and replace characters, add a prefix and/or suffix to file names, or completely rename files using the same file name with incremental counter.

    You could also use the free DMEX explorer context menu extension. It has a simple way of handling the most common multiple file rename tasks in its context menu.
